“One print driver to rule them all,” many have tried, and many have failed.
EveryonePrint recently launched a new product, Hybrid Cloud Platform (HCP), and one of the features we are marketing is a ‘Single print driver’.
Being a seasoned veteran of the print market space, when I first heard that we were doing this, I thought for sure I was destined to become one of the many who claimed to have this but failed to really deliver.
Why do so many fail, why is this so difficult?
The problem is that every single printer in the market has a unique print driver, some even offer more than one print driver. There are drivers for color, drivers for black and white. Drivers for advanced print options. Not to mention unique drivers for each operating system a user might have. Most developers settle for the most common features found across most drivers, and try to develop a single driver to address that space. Leaving room for failure when a customer uses advanced print attributes, or needs enhanced print options.
From an end user perspective, I absolutely see the appeal for a single driver option. The time savings for IT, not having to manage hundreds of print drivers, is worth almost any cost. The end users printing, having one consistent driver just makes their work process that much simpler.
But from a sales person’s point of view, having to be on the front line with the customer if this failed, I was hesitant.
Here we are, months after our initial launch of HCP, the first customer installs are complete and running, and we continue to scale and deploy more customers every day. Can you guess what the feedback has been about the single, universal driver?
People love it! It actually works!
Much to my surprise, what started out as just one feature in a list of unique features HCP can offer, has become an incredible selling point. HCP offers a single print driver that can support any printer and MFP in the market. Not only can we support the standard driver options, but we can capture all of the advanced print options that the printer may offer. The driver remains simple to deploy, and is built in such a manner that if new devices hit the market, we can easily incorporate any unique driver options they may introduce.
So to any one looking for the benefits of a single print driver, or any kindred sales person who would like to be able to offer their customers a true single driver solution, but just doesn’t believe this is really possible – I challenge you to give HCP a try! Don’t take my word for it, let the solution do the talking, I promise you won’t regret it.
